چکیده

Early generation ceramic articulations were problematic in terms of ceramic implant fracture and wear. Although the mechanical properties of ceramic material have improved during the last three decades, ceramic component fracture remains an issue. Many authors have reported fractures of the ceramic head, and a few have described ceramic acetabular insert fracture. However, these complications are only encountered rarely, and all cases reported to date involve a history of minor trauma. Here, we describe a case that required 2ndrevision with a CoCr metal head and conventional polyethylene liner due to a recurrent fracture of the ceramic head.

Fatal Cobalt Cardiomyopathy Following Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty – A Brief Report with Review of Literature

Ceramic bearing surfaces are being increasingly used in young patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. However, failures have been reported including fractures even with the newer third generation ceramics. The recommendedtreatment for fracture of ceramic bearing surfaces is complete synovectomy and revision total hip arthroplasty. However, disappointing results have also bee...

Severe metallosis leading to femoral head perforation.

This article describes a case of severe metallosis in a 67-year-old woman who initially underwent primary total hip arthroplasty with a ceramic-on-ceramic articular bearing. This was subsequently revised to a metal-on-polyethylene articulation due to ceramic liner fracture. She presented with severe hip pain and a pelvic mass. Infective workup was negative. Perforation of the cobalt-chrome femo...

Ceramic Head Fracture in Ceramic-on-Polyethylene Total Hip Arthroplasty

Revision rates of total hip arthroplasty have decreased after introducing total hip arthroplasty (THA) using ceramic component, since ceramic components could reduce components wear and osteolysis. The fracture of a ceramic component is a rare but potentially serious event. Thus, ceramic on polyethylene articulation is gradually spotlighted to reduce ceramic component fracture. There are a few ...

Metallosis after Exchange of the Femoral Head and Liner following Ceramic Acetabular Liner Dissociation in Total Hip Arthroplasty with a Modular Layered Acetabular Component

The type of bearing material that should be used in revision surgery after the failure of ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains controversial. In the case of ceramic fracture, the residual ceramic particles can cause consequent metallosis when metal implants are used for revision THA. On the other hand, in the case of THA failure without ceramic fracture, revision THA with a m...

Recurrent Catastrophic Ceramic Femoral Head Failure in Total Hip Arthroplasty

Fracture of a modern ceramic head component in total hip replacement is an uncommon but catastrophic complication. Hence, the occurrence of a second ceramic head fracture in the same hip replacement of an individual represents a perishingly rare event. We present the case as a means of highlighting potential risk factors for ceramic head fracture and suggest possible management strategies in su...
